“We focus on the three dimensions of fitness,” says Olly. Local resident and personal trainer, Oliver Evans (Olly) and his partner Grace Upshall have teamed up to form 3D Burn, a unique local fitness outfit. “If you work on your strength through circuit training, your flexibility and core through stretching and your cardio through interval training, you’ve got most bases covered. We also offer nutritional advice and meal plans to help clients to make the very best of their course with us. Our approach is to provide all the support you need to reach your goals during the duration of the course, ” says Olly.
“…In our free trials, we offer a ten-minute taster of each class to prospective clients and also help new clients to learn how to test their own body both before and after the course…”
Starting Out
We met up at the Canada Water Café so Olly could tell me more about the origins of 3D Burn and how they operate. “We certainly have complementary backgrounds and skills,” explained Olly. “Grace trained as a Dancer at Liberates School of Performing Arts and graduated with a 3 Year HND Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance). She has recently set up an entertainment and dance agency with a friend sourcing dancers for shows. My sister got to know of Grace, introduced us and 3D Burn was born.” Olly’s background is in sport and fitness. He played squash six days a week aged 11 to 21 and in 2007 was picked to play for England. He continued his squash through freelance coaching and took a diploma in personal training to level 3 whilst at Premier in Bristol. All this whilst running a wood-shredding business full-time!
“…We’d really prefer to stay working in our own community and develop our business here…”
Affordable and Inclusive
“We want to offer affordable and inclusive fitness training,” says Olly. “We work with groups of clients over a period of four, six or eight weeks. The same people turn up each time so they build a strong bond of mutual support and encouragement. Having two of us at every session means that we can offer special attention to each client whilst keeping the costs down. We are able to combine the personal training aspects with dance elements like core, stretching and flexibility which makes for a rounded physical workout. We’ve experimented with different patterns but at the moment we hold two classes at a time each for 2½ hours a week – one runs on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (½ hour) whilst the other runs just Tuesday and Thursday. In our free trials, we offer a ten-minute taster of each class to prospective clients and also help new clients to learn how to test their own body both before and after the course. That way people know what they are getting into, we can set realistic goals for the period of the course and they can really see the results of their effort.”

3D Burn local ambitions
3D Burn has been working in the area from the first. “We’d love to find somewhere with more space and longer hours,” admits Olly “but as most of our clients are really local, it’s difficult to imagine where that might be. If we expanded, it would be to run a third course using some great new equipment we’ve recently introduced to the classes. We’ve got sprint bands and free form which are both completely portable and make the sessions even more fun. We both just love the area. It’s so quiet and not at all how London is supposed to be. There is a lack of good local gym facilities and it’s so well placed. We’d really prefer to stay working in our own community and develop our business here.”
