Canada Water Xmas Night Market will be held on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 December between 17:00 and 22:00 on Canada Water Plaza.

  • Fancy an outdoor party with a Winter theme?
  • Interested to make friends of neighbours and increase your network?
  • Want to stay local and support local businesses?

We are planning a range of great stalls selling food from across the world and craft beers from local breweries. The last Night Market in November was a great success and we want to encourage local people to join in the party this time to make it a place to meet new people and have some fun. Its a celebration of all the wonderful diversity in our city and the people who make SE16 so great!

2014-11-23 07.22.09The Night Market is the brainchild of Tina Jennings who is the force behind the Brixton Night Market in Windrush Square Brixton. She has developed the night market model that aims to offer a leg up to local people with little experience of running a stall; each time, some stalls are offered at a subsidised rate so new entrepreneurs from the community can take their first steps in street trading. Developing local business dovetails for Tina with building stronger community. “We aim to give new traders a chance to learn from the old hands and to test their skills and product on their friends and neighbours. I hope they will graduate to running stalls at bigger markets and at festivals,” says Tina.

In Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, we are keen to build the opportunities for people from many different backgrounds and with a wide range of ideas to taste success. Canada Water Plaza is a real opportunity – right by the tube, train and bus station – to make a real difference to local tradespeople. We already know that the Night Market is an idea that works but we want to see if the community can come behind the idea and make it a monthly party for everyone. Building on the SEHour MeetUps that have proved an exciting way for people from all parts of the community to meet, share and make friends, we think the Night Market could be as much a social opportunity as a way to bring on our local businesses.

So we are keen to hear from local people about what you can bring to the party. Do you have an idea for a stall that you’d like to test out? Do you run a local business and want more customers from the area? Do you play a musical instrument or sing in a choir? We want to add music and the arts more generally to the mix. Do you produce art or crafts that could be sold on a stall? Do you know anyone who would like to join in singing carols this month and make it all feel more festive?
