The past of Rotherhithe and Bermondsey are dominated by the era of the docks which often obliterates what went before. Our resident historian of our maritime traditions – Andie Byrnes – who writes A Rotherhithe Blog – did us a service back in 2008 by beginning a series of posts about the heritage of SE16 in wider historical context. Her first post starts in the time of Henry VIII and takes us through to the late seventeenth century. For those who like to see themselves as the descendants of the area’s inhabitants, these posts are a great introduction.
